Reading Fluency Training Program
Just like you can train for sports, you can train your eyes for reading.
In just 5 minutes a day, your kids can train their eye muscles to be able to read faster and more accurately.
Your kids work on speeding up their visual processing speed, rapid automatized naming (RAN) skills, and inherently improve their reading comprehension.
What does this mean?
Your kids will train their eyes to be able to:
- Read faster without skipping, skimming, or repeating information
- Read more smoothly from left to right
- Notice the differences between letters in words faster
- Read every vowel and consonant letter combination in English
- Finish school work faster because they will be able to read faster
Plus, your kids get to compete against themselves every day.
📈 Kids chart their progress every day and see improvement nearly every day.
These drills may seem very simple, and they start that way, but they work on raw visual processing skills. These training drills test how fast you can see the differences between words and letters. This trains you to be a more accurate reader.
Includes:
- 1x Student Book with 52 reading fluency drills
- 1x Instructor Book with 52 reading fluency drills
- Research-proven design
- Drills organized by phonetic patterns

What do parents and teachers say?
“When I first heard of Bonnie Terry’s 5 Minutes to Better Reading Skills program, I assumed it was only for beginning readers. Not so! It’s for everyone! My kids from 3rd to 6th grade are already benefiting from it and we’ve only been using it for a week. Their reading speed, confidence, and comprehension are going up by leaps and bounds!”

“I ordered your fluency drills and I am using them. They are an extremely valuable resource! Thank you for taking the time to organize these drills. The patterns of each drill page as well as the succession are truly a stroke of brilliance. Students are so self-motivated and are eager to track their progress.”

What is reading fluency?
Reading fluency is the ability to read smoothly, easily, and quickly. Good readers can read words automatically without having to sound out each syllable (also known as decoding). In other words, you don’t have to spend a lot of effort and attention on the mechanics of reading. Reading becomes easy. Word recognition becomes easy.
Reading fluency is the foundation of comprehension. It enables us to read faster and more accurately. Teaching fluency is often a challenge, but our reading drills make it so much easier!
How does it work?
Each week, your student will work on one reading drill. The reading drills start with the most basic short vowels and progressively get more difficult over the 52 reading drills (long vowels, vowel team (vowel-vowel words), r-controlled words, and more).
Your student will do a practice read (1-2 minutes) and then a timed read (1 minute). A parent, older sibling, or teacher will follow along and keep track of any errors. Afterward, your student will chart how many words they read and how many mistakes they made from the timed read.

Kids love to see their progress each day, and they know it only takes 5 minutes a day. This is huge for students who feel like they aren’t making improvements in their reading abilities.
This reading fluency program provides daily 5-minute lessons so that all learners, no matter their age, succeed! Because students chart their progress each day, they are able to tangibly see their improvement!

The reading instruction helps:
- Reading speed and accuracy
- Struggling readers
- Word recognition
- Repeated readings of the same passage to build skills and reading performance
- Oral fluency reading
- Reading rate

FAQs
The Reading Fluency Training Program is for all levels, kindergarten through adults.
The first drills are very simple words. The key here is we are working on raw visual processing and reading speed. This is how fast you can see a word and say it aloud. This helps fine-tune your eye movements to move as smoothly as possible from left to right across a page.
So, everyone, even adults, start at the first reading training exercise.
When you really want to build fluency skills it is best to start with the building blocks of the language, no matter what your age.
The Reading Fluency Training Program gradually builds your skills and covers every phonemic component in the English language.
As time goes on, you will see your speed and fluency improve with more challenging words. But, we need a solid foundation built, so we start everyone with the first reading drills. When a solid foundation is built, your fluency is improved for life.
Reading and rereading familiar words builds quick and effortless reading. This includes reading similar words that change just one letter such as sand, land, and hand or pet, pit, and pot.
Remember, longer words are just combinations of shorter words or word parts known as syllables. (e.g., adding suffixes: painted and standing; adding prefixes: return and pretend)
You typically see the first results in 4-5 days, as long as you work the program. You will chart progress on a daily basis.
However, we’re not able to foresee every incident that could impact how your child cognitively responds to instruction, so results may take a bit longer.
Each day, you will notice that your child is reading more words per minute with fewer mistakes. Sometimes it’s one more word per minute, other times it’s 3, 5, or even 8 more words per minute. And, again the mistakes per minute typically go down quite rapidly, too.
The short answer is yes!
Each day you do a practice read which takes about 2-3 minutes and then a timed 1 minute read. Finally, you chart your progress (1 minute) and call it a wrap!
The Reading Fluency Program suggests doing the fluency training 3 to 5 days a week. For the most progress, you will want to be as consistent as possible. Studies show that the consistency of short daily sessions gives more progress than longer sessions twice a week.
You might even think of this like learning to play the piano. You must practice daily for it becomes second nature. So, the more activities you do, the greater your child’s improvement will be.
What does a typical day look like?
- Print out the reading activities (typically once/week)
- Do the fluency training with your kids (5 minutes)
This program has been designed by learning disabilities expert and board-certified educational therapist Bonnie Terry, M.Ed., BCET.
Bonnie originally designed this curriculum in her private learning center in the 1990s where she saw kids with dyslexia, ADHD, auditory processing disorder, kids on the autism spectrum, and numerous other learning challenges.
She learned first hand what worked and what didn’t.
Bonnie was only able to see kids twice a week for an hour each time and had to figure out a way to make progress in reading and spelling in that short amount of time.
She discovered specific multisensory activities worked.
She discovered that she could teach spelling through spelling patterns while teaching individual sound components of letters.
She discovered that you could train your eye muscles for reading just like you can train your body for sports.
She discovered that to successfully teach reading, you must teach all 5 principles of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary).
She discovered that teaching through hands on games is not only fun but strengthens kids skills and associations with learning.
She discovered teaching by the Science of Reading before it was known as the Science of Reading.
Parents and teachers kept asking what it was that she was doing in her learning center because of the transformative results the kids saw in such little time.
She realized that she needed to make this curriculum available to all students.
When you teach in these ways, all kids can successfully read and spell, not matter whether they have learning challenges or not.
Since her private learning center, Bonnie Terry, M.Ed., BCET has teamed up with her son, Nick Terry, who is a design and technology expert to create Scholar Within.
This way, they’ve been able to bring Bonnie Terry’s original curriculum into a step-by-step format that all families can do at home with their kids and teachers can do with their students.
We are confident that you and your child will love our reading fluency program. Your child will make tremendous progress with reading fluency. They will love seeing their progress on a weekly if not daily basis. They will become an accurate and confident reader.
If you are, however, unsatisfied with the program during the first 7-days, just contact us and we will refund your payment.
